Since 2018 OzFish has been leading the restoration of seagrass meadows in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia. It engages hundreds of recreational fishers and community members to take part in a massive effort to restore the lost seagrass meadows of Cockburn Sound. Without these habitats, fish populations will continue to decline.

Over the past four years, more than three million seagrass fruits have been collected and over 2.1 million seeds have been redistributed into the restoration zones of Cockburn Sound. 2022 was their biggest success yet, with another two hectares of seagrass planted.

To put this in perspective, that roughly equates to around 50,000 fish returning to this part of the ocean.

Seagrass for Snapper – Cockburn Sound is a collaborative project with the University of Western Australia and RecFishWest, and is made possible by the WA Government’s Recreational Fishing Initiative Fund, Water Corporation, MMA, Adreno, and BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing and Seafood Positive.
